Kohli just piled up his 33rd ODI hundred that helped India register a 6 wicket victory over South Africa in the First ODI that was played at Kingsmead yesterday. Batting first, South Africa made 269 for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs and the highlights of the South African innings was 120 runs from 112 balls by Faf du Plessis. Quinton de Kock, Chris Morris, and Andile Phehlukwayo also chipped in with useful contributions of 34, 37 and 27 runs respectively.

For India, Kuldeep Yadav took 3 wickets for 34 runs, whereas Yuzvendra Chahal took 2 wickets for 45 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah took 1 wicket each for 71 and 56 runs respectively.

India began the chase in style and the Indian openers made 33 runs for the first wicket as Rohit Sharma was out for 20 runs from 30 balls. Shikar Dhawan was also out when the score was on 67 and his contribution was 35 runs from 29 balls. After that Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane played a crucial partnership that paved the way for an Indian victory. Kohli slammed his 33rd century in ODIs by scoring 112 runs from 119 balls. Ajinkya Rahane scored 79 runs from 86 balls and he was also looking too comfortable while batting.

After the match, former England opener Michael Vaughan hailed Kohli as the Greatest run chaser in ODIs. Indeed Kohli has scored 18 centuries in successful run chases in ODIs and his average is stunning at 94.04. With this century in Kingsmead, Kohli has now scored hundreds in every country that he has played in.

Former cricketers like VVS Laxman and Mohammad Kaif also praised Kohli’s performance.

Virat Kohli now averages 56.09 in ODIs with 33 centuries and 45 half-centuries. Kohli has now hit centuries in all the nine countries he has played in except Pakistan, where he has not yet played any matches. Yesterday’s Indian victory also brought an end to South Africa’s 17 match winning streak at home.

Now everyone is looking for Virat Kohli’s performance at the second ODI which will be played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on this coming Sunday.
