Lungi Ngidi – The New South African Fast Bowling Sensation
The second test at SuperSport Park, Centurion between India and South Africa has witnessed the arrival of yet another bowling sensation for South Africa and it is none other than Lungi Ngidi. The tall 21-year-old right-handed fast bowler had a magical spell of 6 wickets for 39 runs in the second innings. His bowling exploits helped him team seal victory against India by 135 runs and also a personal man of the match award.
This victory has helped South Africa win the series against India as the South Africans had already won the first test. Lungi Ngidi made his debut in the second test and had a not so impressive figure of 1-51 in the first innings. But in the second innings, Ngidi was always pumped up and tear apart the Indian batting line up in style. His teammate Kagiso Rabada also provided crucial support with a bowling figure of 3-47.
Lungi Ngidi along with Kagiso Rabada seems to be the future of the South African bowling department and both of them are just 21 and 22 years old respectively. If nurture in the proper way, Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada could serve well the South African team for a long time. Lungi Ngidi had made his T20 International debut for South Africa against Sri Lanka on 20th January 2017 where he had figures of 2-12 and subsequently fetched him the Man of the Match award.
Lungi Ngidi was also selected for the ODI tournament against Sri Lanka, but was later ruled out due to abdominal pain. With his latest exploits, he is even being compared with the Caribbean legends of the 80s especially Michael Holding. Similar to Michael Holding, Lungi Ngidi doesn’t charge in his run-up and is quite smooth.
Lungi Ngidi’s bowling also has a bit of Patrick Patterson, another fierce pacer from the generation that followed Holding.
