UEFA Euro 2012 is Just Round the Corner
The much awaited UEFA Euro 2012 Football Championship or the Euro Cup Championship is just around the corner and will be kicked off on 8th of June and the winners will be decided on the grand finale day which is 1st July 2012. This is the 14th edition of the European Championship and would decide the best soccer team among the European nations. The 14th Edition of Euro Cup Soccer Championship would be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine and these two nations are hosting this football event for the first time.
There would be 16 football teams from Europe which would compete for the UEFA Euro 2012 Championship and the teams are divided into 4 groups consisting of 4 teams each. 8 teams that qualify in the group matches would fight it out in the quarter finals and 4 teams who taste victory in the quarter finals would eventually enter the semi finals of Euro Cup 2012. The teams victorious in the semi finals would enter the final to give a try at the most prestigious Football trophy in the world.
The last tournament was hosted by Austria and Switzerland in 2008 which was won by Spain, the World Champions. Spain won the trophy by beating Germany 1-0 and the lone goal of Euro 2008 final was presented by Fernando Torres of Spain. The match was a tight one and both the teams had their chances, but Spain was the only team that was able to convert the opportunities into a spectacular goal to bag the trophy for the second time in the history of UEFA Euro Cup Championship. It was Germany’s 3rd loss in a Euro Cup final and the other times Germany failed in the finals were in 1976 and 1992.
Germany wins the table with 3 championship victory so far, followed by France and Spain with 2 cups. Denmark, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy and USSR all have won the championship each time. So this time football fans are expecting a new name into the list of the European champions and there are quite few teams who have the potentiality to win the Euro Championship for the first time. One main big team that still misses the Euro Cup trophy in the cupboard is Portugal and they have come close to it many times by flattered in the end.
The 16 team format in Euro Cup football was introduced since 1996 and from 1980 to 1992 only 8 teams competed for the final rounds of Euro Cup soccer. Before 1980, there were only 4 teams which sweated it out for the title in the final rounds. Before qualifying to the final rounds of the tournaments, there are qualifying matches which decides the final 16 teams that compete each other in the final round.
Some of the big names in European footballs have left their mark in the tournament and the championship has also saw the rise of many big stars. It is one of the most viewed international football championship after FIFA World Cup soccer and this really tells about the importance of Euro Cup soccer championship.
