World Cup 2014 – Columbia Stuns Greece and Italy Defeats England
In an important match in the 2014 World Cup soccer Columbia beat Greece 3-0 ending their 16 year old goal draught in the world cup championships. In another match Italy defeated England by a margin of 2-1 which have created a remarkable setback for England’s hope of winning the championship this year. It was expected to be a thriller and in the end Italy walks back as the winners in a match that saw a lot of ups and downs.
In the Group C match at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Columbia defeated Greece by a margin of 3-0 to bolster their chances of reaching the second round of world cup 2014 and also ending their 16 year old goal drought. Playing in their first match of this world cup Columbia was in good control of the match from the beginning itself and show a great sense of self confidence. The first goal was created in the 5th minute of the first half and the opening goal for Columbia was scored by Pablo Armero.
Greece also got some opportunities but they could not really convert them into goals and their hopes were again shattered when Columbia’s Teofilo Gutierrez scored the second goal in the 58th minute. In 3rd minute of the second half’s injury time, Columbia added more salt into Greece’s wound as Columbia’s James Rodríguez scored the third goal of the match. By this time Greece almost lost their hope of salvaging any sort of pride and in the end Columbia won the match 3-0.
In another match between two major teams, Italy scored a spectacular victory of 2-1 agains another European great, England. Football fans all over the world was waiting for this great match between two strong teams and as expected the match turned out to be interesting where Italy had the final laugh. In the match held at Arena Amazonia in Manaus, Claudio Marchisio of Italy scored the first goal in the 35th minute which left the England team a great shock. But England was soon back in their elements as they equalized through a good looking goal by Daniel Sturridge in the 37th minute.
The equalizer really charged up the English team and both the teams ended on 1-1 at the half time. In the 50th minute, Italy scored its second goal through Mario Balotelli, who is regarded as one of the best Italian players of 2014 world cup squad. Italy brilliantly maintained the lead till the end of the game and made sure that they made their path to the second round clearer. Italy’s Andrea Pirlo was very much instrumental in deciding the fate of the game as he controlled the course of the game through his amazing playmaking skills.
In another Group C match at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) scored a 2-1 victory over Japan. Even though Japan took the initial lead in the 16th minute through Keisuke Honda, Ivory Coast struck back beautifully with Wilfried Bony and Gervinho scoring in the 64th and 66th minutes respectively, ensuring a major victory for Ivory coast in the 2014 world cup championship.
